Designed to make use of proven (alas antique, 1980s) rocket technology and existing resources (US taxpayer money), the NASA SLS uses modified Space Shuttle main engines for its central core stage and Space Shuttle derived solid rockets for the outboard boosters. The NASA SLS Block1 will generate 8.8 million pounds of thrust at lift off and burn billions of dollars for each flight. That’s enough raw power to carry the Orion crew vehicle, an upper stage booster, and four astronauts all the way to lunar orbit and back... assuming that that it lifts off, ever, at all. We've been waiting a decade already...
And in a technical and budgetary triumph held over from the 1950s, most of the SLS, once used and used once, is destined for a watery grave. Poor fishes.
SLS and Orion are key components of Project Artemis, the NASA program to land the first woman and the next man on the moon within the next five years... unless cancelled. The NASA SLS is designed as a modular system of components, stages, and payloads so it can fulfil multiple roles in the course of Project Artemis. You can expect spectacular launches up to 200 feet and then a graceful return to Earth under a colorful 18-inch parachute. This rocket looks great whether counting down on the launch pad or displayed on a shelf in a museum of follies. Between launches, show off your NASA SLS with its own, custom display stand.
We are bundling this Almost Ready to Fly (ARTF) kit with six Klima C6-3 motors and igniters. Klima motors are lighter than the Estes equivalent and offer the full 10Ns total thrust allowed in C motors. Higher flights assured.
