The Heatseeker is a really well made kit. It took an inexperienced builder about 35 minutes to assemble it and it is very sturdy once built. I was impressed that Estes had listened to previous concerns (the previous model had a tendency to attack those who launched it!) and thanks to a little bit of clay for the tip of the nose cone it now flys really well.

First flight should be on a B4-4 or B6-4 as it'll tear off the pad. It has looks which will wow the kids and even make an adult smile. On a C6-5 it'll fly just short of its advertised altitude and you better have plenty of field to land in if it's windy.

This is a great rocket for classes and small school playing fields (except on the C6-5 - you'll just about be able to see it as it drifts off into the distance). I wish we had the space to launch it with a Klima D9-5 or Klima D9-7 in it.

We made a few mods of our own. A kevlar cord and loop which runs almost the length of the body, attached to a length of cotton elastic three times the body length. This prevents damage due to snap back of the nose cone on the shorter Estes elastic and it also creates a recovery system with longer life.
